That Perfect Green Lawn Part 3
April 19, 2010
Last week we took a look at the cool season grasses and this warm season grasses is the topic. In this category, you will find Bermuda, St. Augustine, and Zoysia.
Bermuda grass is a grass that can handle drought condition more than any other type of grass. On the other hand, it can endure all the weather condition found in the southern United States since it is the most prominent grass you will find in the south. This grass can grow in high traffic areas as well, so honestly it may be the most durable grass of all. However, there are more than one variety and texture of Bermuda grass from fine to medium and even a slight difference in color from light to deep green. The grass normally spreads quickly and will invade any place it can reach during spidering. The grass is fast growing and usually chokes out weeds. Bermuda grass loves heat, does not need a lot of water and spreads quickly. The grass does well when mowed to around one inch; however, it does produce thatch that has to be removed to ensure the grass does not become diseased. Bermuda grass will turn brown as soon as Jack Frost comes to visit, but as soon as spring begins to bloom, you will see the grass turn green.
St. Augustine grass does great in shady areas. The grass is not durable and has a coarse feel. This grass needs plenty of aeration and dethatching. The grass is considered to be a subtropic grass that has pointed blades. It downs spread quickly but will choke out other grass and weeds. The grass is tough but does best in shaded areas. The good news is that this type of grass can withstand salty areas so the coastal areas are wonderful areas for this grass. This is not on the other hand a low maintenance lawn, it requires watering and fertilizing as well as dethatching once a year. Cinch bugs love this grass so beware.
Zoysia takes some time to turn green and is one of the last grasses to turn green. This grass does not mind drought conditions and does well in high heat. This is a low maintenance grass that is pretty tough with textures from fine to coarse. The grass is slow to spread via rhizomes or stolons. This grass can take put to three full years to fill in. Be sure to remove the thatch yearly though as this can cause you to have a weak lawn. Insects and disease do not like Zoysia grass except for the cinch buy. Zoysia must have warm nights in order to thrive and will turn brown at the end of the season.
Next week, we will learn how to start growing your lawn beginning from seed.

I guess it’s one of the biggest faults of the modern human, that of wanting what we can’t have and the green lawn is no exception.
Getting a green lawn is a lot of work. I have to admit I gave up on that long ago.
